A Brief History of Grand Rapids, MI

Europeans first settled the Grand Rapids area near the start of the 19th century by missionaries and fur traders that lived in reasonable peace with the Ottawa Indians, as they traded their European metal and goods for their fur pelts. Joseph and Madeleine La Framboise created the first Indian/European trading post in West Michigan along the bank of the Grand River near what is called Ada today.
