Museums and Theaters

Most people, when they're planning a vacation to take in the arts, don't think of Grand Rapids, Michigan as the most likely destination. They're more likely to head to New York City or Toronto. But unless you're planning to buy real estate in Riverdale, Toronto as well, you should check out Grand Rapids, Michigan instead. There are dozens of museums and theater destinations that would keep any arts lover happy. And some of them are so unusual that you won't see anything like it anywhere else. Read on to hear about some of our favorites.

Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park

Named as one of the top 30 museums to see in the world by the author of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, the Meijer Gardens contain over 130 acres of botanical gardens and original sculptures that you definitely can't buy to adorn the lawn of your new home in Ontario. There are rare plants from all over the world in the gardens (including carnivorous plants), a nature trail that takes you all around the park, and a model farm that kids love. There's even a special children's garden. A great place to go with the whole family.

Gerald Ford Museum

Michigan isn't just the land of Great Lakes and horse fences, it's also the home state of former president Gerald Ford. Set in a 20 acre park along the Grand River is Michigan's tribute to him - the Gerald Ford Museum. Inside you can follow the former president's life through exhibits and photographs and if you've ever dreamed of being president you can visit a full scale replica of the oval office and take your picture inside. There's an interactive cabinet, sound and light show, and a gallery of gifts presented by foreign dignitaries. It's a museum not to be missed.

DeVos Place Convention Center

Though it hosts many different types of events throughout the year at its auditorium and performance hall, DeVos Place is perhaps best known as the home of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. The performance hall seats almost 2,500 people and also plays host to musical and theater productions such as traveling Broadway shows. If you want to relax after looking at Bosley real estate, check out their calendar to see what's on at www.devosplace.org.

Actors' Theater

Running plays on everything from the Shakespearian classics to modern stories on how heat shrink sleeves affect the environment is the Actors Theater in Grand Rapids. It's a not for profit organization that helps train actors from the Grand Rapids Community College and beyond, so come out and show your support. Many of the plays they produce have been penned by local playwrights.
