Everyone can get a little down in the winter, especially when they're buried in snow. Others on the other hand prefer a mountain of fresh powder to the sunniest of beaches. For those and many others, Grand Rapids, Michigan is the hidden gem of the Northern United States. From womens hockey camps to winter festivals, there's more than a few reasons to consider Grand Rapids as your vacation destination. To get you started, though, here are ten of the highlights.
As mentioned above, there are a number of great winter activities to take in while in Grand Rapids. For snowboard of ski enthusiasts, there are almost a dozen ski areas within 100 miles of the city, giving visitors ample opportunity to hit the slopes. For those who prefer a slower pace, something like a Dallas spa package, why not take a relaxing evening skate at Rosa Parks circle?
Those who prefer spectator sports to participation should head down to Van Andel Arena during hockey season to see the Grand Rapids Griffens, AHL affiliate of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. The big team from Hockeytown USA has a knack for drafting like an architect Canada and discovering some of the world's best players, so there's no telling what future superstars you might see at a Griffins game.
If hockey's not your thing, see what musical events Van Andel is offering during your stay. Some of the best musicians stop by from time to time, such as John Mayer or the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Classic music aficionados should also stop by the Opera Grand Rapids to take in some of Michigan's most renowned musical culture.
We can't forget those of you who love to shop! Check out either the Woodland Mall or RiverTown Crossings for some of the city's best shopping, each with 120 different stores to find everything from cheap postcard printing to collectible antiques. Or why not take a stroll through Downtown to not only check out some of the local shops for some quality aquarium gravel but take in the heart of the city and its beautiful riverfront scenery while you're at it.
It's hard to say no to a great party, and this year Grand Rapids is throwing a once in a lifetime celebration. In honor of their centennial year, the city is having Friday night exhibits at the Grand Rapids Art Museum to showcase the progress the city and its citizens have made throughout the century. Mark your calendar for New Year's Eve, when the celebration hits its crescendo with an all ages show with loads of talent and the always popular ball drop.
The best reason we can give you to visit Grand Rapids is, of course, why not? With all there is to see and do, there's really no reason not to! |
